Michael Frank, Author

Michael Frank got his driver's license on the morning of his 16th birthday and a year later, bought his first car, a 1974 Ford Capri with a "sleeper" 2.8 liter V-6 (and a rusting carapace of peeling blue metallic paint). The first weekend of Capridom, while Michael was away on a school trip, a neighbor plowed into the car. Michael was thrilled; he took the insurance money and lovingly massaged every dent and wart out of the surface of his Ford--and then had it painted Candy Apple Red. The car tested Michael's mechanical acuity (though not more than the subsequent purchase of a 1960 Beetle) while cementing his love for all things automotive. As an adult (sometimes arguable) he's covered the car world as both a writer and editor for such distinguished organs as National Geographic Adventure, Esquire, Forbes and Forbes.com (and currently at times for Businessweek.com) and is also a deputy editor for two-wheel-focused magazines, Bicycling and Mountain Bike, both published by Rodale.

For a very long time in this country, about 20% of all sales came in the form of trucks. Not what the industry calls “trucks” (i.e., SUVs), but actual pickups. That figure always astonished me; we simply don’t have that many contractors, painters and plumbers and there are fewer actual...Read More»

“We get squat.” That was the pronouncement of a journalist and car-nut friend of mine named James who I bumped into on the streets of a northern Italian town this past spring. His pronouncement came when he spied a gen-VI 4Motion Golf TDI. “We” Americans don’t get the new Golf (ne Rabbit)...Read More»

Sales of Luxury watches are down. Sales of luxury everything is down, including cars. But this past winter Mercedes bravely brought to market a blurring of both when it promised to sell 200 (worldwide; 63 in the U.S.) SL63 AMG IWC Edition cars. Here I’ll first dissect the name, then discuss its...Read More»

Have you heard? Frugal is the new wretched excess. Target’s Merona house brand is the new Paul Smith, Kia, the new Aston Martin. Should I say it louder? Really, luxe is dead. Really! Unless you still have dough, in which case none of the above applies. Exclusivity still trumps piety and it will...Read More»
