Rex Roy, Car Expert

How do you know when somebody is a serious automotive writer? Google their name and see what comes up. A search of "Rex Roy" turns up his stories at TheCarConnection.com, The Detroit News, WindingRoad.com, AOL Autos, and TheAutoChannel.com. Links to sites selling Roy's popular coffee table book, Motor City Dream Garages, will also populate your search results. Roy words and photos also wind up in traditional magazines such as American Driver and Sport Truck. (He quips, "You have to take something to the bathroom.") While the above demonstrates Roy's ability to get published to a large and varied audience, his background proves he's a true automotive junkie. Roy has owned an automotive speed shop, a piece of a high-performance driving school, and plenty of wicked-fast cars (mostly sleepers). Upon graduating from the University of Michigan in three years with distinction (1984), Roy was drawn to journalism. He, however, set out on a career in automotive marketing because the money was better. Born, raised and currently living in Grosse Pointe, Mich., Roy created award winning films and catalogs for many of Detroit's major advertising agencies including J.Walter Thompson (on Ford), Campbell-Mithun-Esty (on Jeep), and D'Arcy Detroit (on Pontiac and Cadillac). During these agency stints, and while operating his own marketing company (Regis Communications, Inc.), the freedom and intellectual honesty of journalism beckoned. In 2005, Roy finally gave in and began contributing for Edmunds.com.
