The Infiniti G37 Coupe is the best-selling coupe in the segment for a number of good reasons: it’s incredibly fast and handles well, and it’s good-looking in a well-heeled way.
There are three different flavors of the all-new 2008 Infiniti G37 coupe: the base, the Journey, and the Sport. Following the pattern Infiniti employed when the company introduced its new G35 sedan in 2007, the team added more power and technology to its new coupe.
This will be difficult for some readers to take, but the 2008 Infiniti G37 coupe may be the equal of a couple of BMW coupes out there. Experts from TheCarConnection.com have compared the new G37 to the BMW 3 Series coupe as well as the new-to-the-U.S. 1 Series. While Bimmer enthusiasts may be aghast, they will be forced to admit that the G37 is, at the very least, a darn good competitor.
The 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe shares some mechanicals with the Nissan 350Z, but the comparisons are mostly under the sheetmetal. The G37 is far more suave outside and inside, with two additional seats in back. The front seats are very comfortable, the rears nearly useless.
The chassis under the 2008 Infiniti G37 is stiff. Up front are double wishbones, and a multilink arrangement brings up the rear. Both ends get stabilizer bars. At the corners are massive disc brakes. Base models get 13-inch platters all around, while 14-inch (front) and 13.8-inch units are used on the Sport 6MT variant. Covering the discs are aluminum 18-inch rims on the base, and 19-inch rims for the Sport 6MT. Directing all this high technology is rack-and-pinion steering gear with electric, as opposed to hydraulic, assist. One criticism focuses on this steering. On the track, it sometimes varies the effort unexpectedly, which is disconcerting but never dangerous. Most drivers will never notice this flaw.
The 2008 coupe's motor, while based on the 2007 G37 sedan's, gets a boost to 330 horsepower this year. This is 24 hp more than the 2007 G35 sedan, and a full 55 hp more than the outgoing 2007 G35 coupe. Redline for the 2008 coupe's V-6 engine is 7,500 rpm. Torque peaks at 5,200 rpm with a twisting force of 270 pound-feet.
Two transmissions back the 3.7-liter V-6: a five-speed automatic and a six-speed manual. The automatic works with electronic controls that help the box shift smarter, especially on the track where the downshift rev-matching helps keep the chassis balanced and the engine in the power band. Roadholding is fantastic, while the ride is a bit nervous, thanks to big tires and a short wheelbase.
For the record, the 2008 Infiniti G37 6MT has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Updated, but still gorgeous, styling is the norm on the 2008 Infiniti G37.
The current Infiniti G37 builds on the sexy, seductive exterior styling of the outgoing G35 coupe and adds fresh interior styling.
The 2008 Infiniti G37 is available in three different trim levels, though it's very difficult to tell them apart externally. Edmunds reports that the three trim levels of this Infiniti 2008 include "base, Journey and Sport 6MT," and the only real difference between them is that the base and Journey come "standard with 18-inch wheels," while the Infiniti 2008 G37 in Sport 6MT trim features "19-inch wheels."
Aside from the different wheels, all versions of the 2008 Infiniti G37 look "great (albeit in a more voluptuous sort of way than the original)," according to Edmunds. Cars.com goes on to describe the "curvaceous body" as integrating "large -- but fairly subtle -- fenders, while the bumper boasts one of the more sinister interpretations of the familiar air dam and side portals you see on many cars." Other reviews read by TheCarConnection.com rave about the exterior of the Infiniti G37, with ForbesAutos praising the "fresh, elegant styling" of this Infiniti 2008 coupe. Automobile adds that the front "looks muscular and tough in person," and "overall, it's a subtle evolution of a great design."
The redesigned interior of the 2008 Infiniti G37 also wins favor with reviewers. Edmunds reviewers love the "user-friendly controls" and "handsome design," while Car and Driver deems the interior, which features "a color monitor to control the radio, climate-control, and optional nav system," to be "pleasant enough." Cars.com also feels that the interior of the Infiniti G37 "is a vast improvement over the first-generation G35, and now features such novelties as aluminum trim modeled after Japanese Washi paper." Rounding out the praise of the interior, Kelley Blue Book reviewers find that "the seven-inch LCD screen included on all models" of this Infiniti 2008 coupe "radiates colorful and attractive graphics that further enhance the new model's more contemporary vibe."

The 2008 Infiniti G37 moves quickly and confidently, and it proves its worth as a comfortable commuter as well.
Coupes are generally meant to be performance machines, and the 2008 Infiniti G37 meets all the criteria of a true performance car. From its sweet V-6 engine to its responsive handling, the Infiniti G37 is ready to be pushed to the limit.
The 2008 Infiniti G37 comes with just one engine option, and it has been improved versus the powerplant on the outgoing model. Reviews read by TheCarConnection.com are suitably impressed with the engine, which Car and Driver says is "a new 3.7-liter version of Nissan's venerable VQ V-6 engine," and on the Infiniti G37, the "power is up 24 horsepower at 330, and the torque output increases two pound-feet to 270." ForbesAutos reports "acceleration was strong and smooth" during their test, and "the engine makes great music as it happily revs to the red line." Edmunds reviewers push the Infiniti 2008 G37 to the limit and find that a "G37 Journey accelerated to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, while a Sport 6MT coupe pulled a nearly identical 5.4 seconds to 60 mph." When compared to the outgoing G35 sedan and its 3.5-liter engine, the Infiniti 2008 G37's extra power is "certainly felt, especially when accelerating out of turns," declares Motor Trend.
Putting the extra horsepower to the road on the Infiniti 2008 G37 is one of two available transmissions. Edmunds notes that "the base and Journey trim levels come standard with a five-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shift automanual control, while the Sport 6MT features a six-speed manual." Reviewers are impressed with both transmissions, and ForbesAutos proclaims "both gearboxes work precisely and are well matched to the potent engine." Automobile is comfortable enough to take sides, though, and they state that their "choice is distinctly for the 6MT," where the "tail-out antics and fun factor outweigh the coarseness" that they feel comes with the manual transmission.
Despite the increase in power output, Cars.com finds that "Infiniti estimates that the G37's engine actually delivers around 1 mpg better gas mileage than the 3.5-liter V-6 in the G35." The actual EPA estimates for a 2008 Infiniti G37 with the manual transmission are 17 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, while the automatic transmission boosts city numbers to 18 mpg but drops to 24 mpg on the highway.
While some vehicles make a point of their blistering straight-line acceleration, the 2008 Infiniti G37 instead focuses on handling and the overall driving experience, which is impeccable. Kelley Blue Book affirms that "performance-focused drivers hoping for a more sophisticated, premium-badged Nissan Z will find satisfaction in" the Infiniti G37. Other reviewers agree, and Motor Trend says "through all but the most aggressive curves, the car stays as flat as the Arizona desert." Car and Driver points out that, even with the sport package, "the chassis soaks up road bumps without the slightest chatter, and the steering remains precise and communicative." While a "four-wheel active steering (4WAS)" system is available, according to Edmunds, they recommend sticking "with the standard steering setup," as the 4WAS system "fails to weight up properly in the corners and provides limited feedback." When it comes time to stop the Infiniti 2008 G37, Motor Trend finds that the brakes are "stellar -- exhibiting excellent response and pedal feel and no fade."

The 2008 Infiniti G37 boasts an upgraded interior but suffers from a lack of storage space.
When it came to comfort and quality, the outgoing Infiniti G35 coupe was no slouch. Fortunately, Infiniti engineers and designers feel that a few improvements can't hurt, and the result is the extraordinarily well-built 2008 Infiniti G37.
The 2008 Infiniti G37 offers four seatbelts, but reviews read by TheCarConnection.com show that fitting four adults inside will be difficult. Car and Driver illustrates this best when they say "adults sardined in the back are faced with the option of tilting their heads sideways or slouching past the point of reasonable comfort." Edmunds adds that "as in many coupes, rear legroom is scant, and rear headroom is particularly compromised by the G37's severely raked back window." On the positive side, Kelley Blue Book notes that "except for limited headroom, the rear seats" on the 2008 Infiniti G37 "are more accommodating than might be apparent." Enough of the rear seats, though, as Car and Driver points out that "as in any coupe, the front seats are the place to be," and the front seats on the Infiniti G37 "are mounted slightly lower" than in the G35 sedan "and offer a greater range of motion," according to Edmunds. They go on to say that "this is good news for taller drivers," as the Infiniti 2008 G37's setup affords greater headroom and allows for an even greater opportunity to find a comfortable driving position. Edmunds also comments that "the available sport seats, with their adjustable bolsters, are very comfortable and snugly hold you in place."
While reviews read by TheCarConnection.com rave about most aspects of the Infiniti G37, they unanimously mention one sore spot: storage space. Edmunds reviewers are quick to state "the trunk is on the small side, with only 7.4 cubic feet of space." Car and Driver also finds that, compared to the similar G35 sedan, there is a "loss of rear-seat and cargo space" on the Infiniti 2008 G37 coupe that hinders its usability as a daily driver. One nice feature that helps improve cargo space is the fact that "the rear seatbacks fold down to expand the trunk," according to Cars.com.
Perhaps the most improved aspect of the Infiniti 2008 G37 is the interior materials quality. Reviewers simply can't say enough about what Edmunds calls the "excellent build quality." Kelley Blue Book also attests that their "'most improved' vote goes to the passenger cabin," where features like "the visually soft aluminum alloy trim (inspired by Japanese washi paper, Infiniti says), as well as the optional African rosewood trim," help bring an upscale ambiance. Motor Trend reviewers conclude that the various interior upgrades "collectively raise the bars of luxury and sport," and they praise the "finer fit and finish" on this Infiniti 2008 coupe.
A further benefit of the fine construction exhibited on the Infiniti 2008 G37 is that it does a wonderful job of reducing road noise. While Automobile feels that the Infiniti G37's engine isn't "quite as melodic as the [BMW] 335i's twin-turbo straight six," reviewers at Car and Driver claim "the exhaust note is a pleasing burble." Other than the engine note, there will be little noise to disturb drivers in the Infiniti G37.

Despite the lack of crash-test ratings, the 2008 Infiniti G37 scores well due to its excellent safety features.
Those interested in the 2008 Infiniti G37's safety record will be disappointed to learn that neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have crash-tested an Infiniti G37. However, the 2008 Infiniti G37 comes with a long list of standard safety features. For the even more safety-conscious, Infiniti offers a few optional safety touches as well on the Infiniti G37.
The standard safety features found on all Infiniti 2008 G37s are enough to draw serious praise in reviews read by TheCarConnection.com. Edmunds reviewers note "all 2008 Infiniti G37s come standard with stability control, traction control, front-seat side airbags," and "full-length curtain airbags." Cars.com adds that "active head restraints" and "four-wheel-disc antilock brakes" are also standard on this Infiniti 2008 G37.
On the optional side of the safety features list, Forbes Autos reports "a Preview Braking function is included with the optional laser-guided Intelligent Cruise Control that automatically pre-pressurizes the brake lines in anticipation of a panic stop." Edmunds says other safety features are available on the "optional Technology Package," which includes "adaptive headlights and front seatbelts that can better prepare for front occupant safety if a collision is anticipated."
Also helping the 2008 Infiniti G37 in the safety category is the impressive visibility enjoyed by the driver. Although Cars.com reviewers are quick to point out that the Infiniti G37 has a "low riding seating position," the generously sized windows help maintain good overall visibility. Edmunds adds that the optional "adaptive headlights" can swivel into a turn, further increasing night driving safety in this Infiniti 2008 coupe.

The features on the 2008 Infiniti G37 are plentiful enough to keep owners happily occupied during long drives.
The Infiniti brand represents a strong mix of luxury, style, and performance, and the features list on the 2008 Infiniti G37 certainly bears that out. Between the lengthy resume of standard features and the impressive array of optional features, the 2008 Infiniti G37 is loaded to the gills.
When it comes to standard features on the Infiniti 2008 G37, reviews read by TheCarConnection.com indicate that "standard features are plentiful," as ForbesAutos puts it. There are a few differences between the three trim levels, but Edmunds mentions that even the base Infiniti G37 comes standard with "bi-xenon headlights, keyless ignition, leather upholstery, eight-way driver and four-way passenger power seats," as well as a "CD/MP3 player with satellite radio." Kelley Blue Book adds that the base model Infiniti 2008 G37 includes a "touch-screen LCD display" that "features an intuitive, visually appealing interface." Moving up to the Journey and Sport 6MT versions of the Infiniti G37, Edmunds says that the "Journey trim adds an eight-way power passenger seat, dual-zone automatic climate control and an in-dash six-CD changer," while the Infiniti 2008 Sport 6MT trim of the G37 gets "sport-styled front seats."
Aside from the standard features, the 2008 Infiniti G37 has plenty of room for little upgrades to suit anyone's taste. Among the more "noteworthy options," ForbesAutos mentions "a rear-view camera, an 11-speaker Bose 'Studio on Wheels' premium audio system with iPod connectivity," and a "Music Box 9.3-gigabyte digital music storage unit." That is far from the end of the list, though, as Kelley Blue Book reviewers also find that the 2008 Infiniti G37 can be equipped with "Intelligent Cruise Control" and "Bluetooth hands-free cell phone connectivity," along with "a hard drive-based touch-screen navigation system with real-time traffic info." The Intelligent Cruise Control offered on the Infiniti G37 is particularly impressive, and Cars.com reports that it "can match highway speeds with the car ahead," and the system even "preloads the brakes for faster response if the car in front slams on its brakes."
