2016 Honda Pilot long-term road test: what do our passengers say?

December 11, 2016

We've now entered the final quarter with our long-term 2016 Honda Pilot, and we've really put it to work over the last 12,500 miles. From hauling kids and dogs to grocery shopping and road trips. The Pilot's lived the life many other Pilots will, that is, shuttling families around constantly while enduring the abuse children and pets put it through.

Of course, through all this we've had dozens of passengers pass through our Pilot's seats. Like everything in this world, opinions were voiced.

Today the question is: what do our passengers say about the 2016 Honda Pilot?

What we were told

Porsche Cayenne owner:

"The Pilot has a particularly comfortable ride, and it's far more quiet inside the cabin than I expected. The exterior looks sharp, inside it's well packaged, and overall it seems terrific for families. Lower trim models seem like a value."

Lexus LS 460 owner:

"It's sharp, and inside it's pretty nice. I hate these seat-mounted arm rests, and why is there no volume button for the infotainment system? Why can't you get HID headlights on any trim, yet it has LED daytime running lights? That just looks silly. It's ridiculous you can only get LED headlights on the top-trim Elite model [and] otherwise it's just halogens."

Honda Odyssey owner:

"I love the sleek and clean layout of the new dash. I am always amazed at the power they can wring out of the 3.5-liter V-6 engine. It's a smart, family-oriented vehicle."

Lexus RX 350 owner:

"This dashboard layout is really nice. It's so simple and easy-to-use. Far easier to navigate than my Lexus. It's really comfortable. Why didn't I just buy one of these?"

Audi A6 owner:

"It's sharp looking, and the interior is very well packaged. It's beyond family friendly, and pretty much perfect for a family on the go. There's lots of glass and it has terrific visibility. It's annoying that you can only get captain's chairs in the Elite trim, and silly that you can't opt for a second-row bench seat in the Elite trim."

Buick Enclave owner:

"This is really nice, what is this again? The seats are comfortable, and it's really well packaged. Too bad you can't get second-row captain's chairs unless you opt for the top Elite trim."

Kia Optima owner:

"This thing is huge! Simply massive. Seems great for families, and love the packaging. Hauls a ton of stuff in the back with the third-row stowed. At $45,000 it seems expensive in Touring trim."

To summarize

Nearly every single person that looked at or rode in our Pilot noted its terrific packaging--a Honda hallmark--and comfortable seats. The design won pretty much everyone over both inside an out.

Sore points? Pretty much all were regarding features or the availability of features (LED headlights, second-row captain's chairs).

What's next for the Pilot?

Winter's arrived and snow is in the forecast. We're hoping to see how the Pilot's all-wheel-drive system handles the white stuff before it heads back south to Georgia.

Technology is more important than ever in vehicles so we'll be taking a look at the apps in Honda Link and the infotainment system itself.

We'll check in on our fuel economy again and discuss what it's like to spend time in the driver seat during a cross-country drive.
