2015-2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport recalled to fix exterior lighting

June 7, 2016

A day after Jaguar Land Rover recalled more than 50,000 cars and SUVs to replace fatally flawed Takata airbags, the automaker has issued a recall of the 2015-2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport. In this case, however, the vehicle's problem is its exterior lighting system.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that the Discovery Sport's license plate illumination lamp supplied by Hella Signal Lighting of Slovakia may be prone to fall out. While that might not sound as serious as, say, losing a brake light, it would make vehicles harder to identify at night.

The recall is limited to 2015 and 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport models built between September 17, 2014 and March 5, 2016. NHTSA estimates that 14,731 vehicles registered in the U.S. are affected.

Land Rover says that it will mail recall notices to owners around June 27, 2016, instructing them to make service appointments with their local dealerships. Dealers will replace the Discovery Sport's rear license plate lamp housings at no charge.

If you own one of these vehicles and have further questions, you're encouraged to contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837 and ask about recall P077. You can also call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 and ask about safety campaign #16V274000.
