New Takata recalls affect 1.5M Infiniti, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Infiniti, Saab, Subaru vehicles

June 1, 2016

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has posted a slew of new recalls related to Takata's fatally flawed airbags. All of these new recalls involve replacement of passenger-side devices.

Though information about some of these recalls has already been published by individual automakers, NHTSA's documents offer a greater degree of detail about the number of vehicles affected and how repairs will be performed.

CHECK OUT: Stop talking about 'accidents', start talking about 'collisions'

Most notably--and perhaps most frustratingly for owners--many of these recalls are being conducted by region. That's because the problem with Takata's airbags is the ammonium nitrate they use during deployment. Unfortunately, that compound destabilizes in the presence of heat and humidity, meaning that replacing airbags in hot, humid Southern states has been deemed a priority. As a result, many of today's recalls are limited to particular zones:

Zone A includes Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Zone B includes Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Zone C: Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming

Keep in mind that, even though your car might not currently be registered in a particular zone, it may have been previously sold or registered in one of those areas. If so, it's affected by these recalls.

Also, please note that these are new recalls. Your car may have already been affected by a different Takata recall--perhaps because of the zone you live in, or perhaps to replace the driver-side airbag. Please read closely.
