Brake-related recall widens to include 2016 Toyota RAV4, Lexus RX350, ES350

April 22, 2016

Yesterday, we told you about the 2016 Nissan Murano and Maxima, which have been recalled to repair an issue with their braking systems. Now, Toyota is recalling the 2016 Toyota RAV4, Lexus RX350, and Lexus ES350 for exactly the same reason.

The underlying causes of both recalls are faulty brake actuators supplied by Advics North America. According to a defect bulletin published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

"The subject vehicles are equipped with an Anti-Lock Braking system (ABS), Traction Control System (TRAC), and Vehicle Stability Control System (VSC) which are controlled by the brake actuator. There is a possibility that some brake actuators may have been assembled with a pump containing an O-ring that is damaged in such a way that the brake fluid pressure may not be properly controlled during ABS, TRAC, and VSC activation."

Depending on how the brake fluid pressure fluctuates, it might take drivers more time to bring their cars to a stop. That increased braking time could lead to an accident.

The recall affects 16,656 Toyota and Lexus vehicles manufactured during the following windows of time:

  • 2016 Toyota RAV4 vehicles built between October 30, 2015 and February 3, 2016
  • 2016 Lexus ES350 vehicles built between September 1, 2015 and February 29, 2016
  • 2016 Lexus RX350 vehicles built between October 26, 2015 and February 8, 2016

Toyota says that it will mail recall notices to owners by June 5, 2016. After receiving those notices, owners will be able to take their vehicles to Toyota or Lexus dealers, who will inspect and replace the brake actuator as necessary.

If you believe that you own one of these vehicles, you're encouraged to contact Toyota customer service at 800-331-4331 and ask about  recalls G0I and GLC. You can also ring NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 and ask about safety campaign #16V198000.
