We've driven the newest vehicles for the 2016 model year, and now, it's nearly time for us to name The Car Connection's Best Car To Buy 2016.
Over the course of the past year, The Car Connection's editors have reviewed and rated the entire fleet of mass-market new vehicles--more than 260 of them, at last count. Each one gets its own score in six different categories, including styling, performance, safety, comfort and utility, features, and fuel economy. Those scores are averaged into a unique TCC Rating.
We take the entire list of TCC Ratings and pull out the top vehicles, and study them carefully--drive them more, and drive them back to back--to come to the single new vehicle we think every car buyer should drive before they sign on the dotted line.
Rules and nominees
To be considered for the Best Car To Buy award, vehicles must be significantly updated or brand-new during the model year. That usually numbers from 75 to 100 new vehicles in any given year.
We also require that vehicles be made available to editors for a road test before December 1, 2015, and be available for purchase by April 30, 2016.
We place an emphasis on affordability by setting a base-price limit of $50,000. While that eliminates some pricey and worthy vehicles, it also ensures that the winning vehicle also delivers strongly on value.
The remaining vehicles are ranked by their TCC Rating, and the the highest-rated vehicle is named our Best Car To Buy. Ties are resolved by editors after considering factors such as--but not limited to--significance and availability.
Many fine new vehicles were introduced this year, and more that two dozen of them were eliminated from the contenders by price and by a TCC Rating falling below 8.0. One vehicle was eliminated because it could not be made available for test drives prior to December 1.
The nominees for The Car Connection's Best Car to Buy will be revealed next Monday. The winner will be named on Monday, January 4, 2016.
