General Motors is recalling more than 29,000 SUVs from the 2016 model year due to a problem with their windshield wiper motors. In some cases, the motor cover can cause the device to overheat, increasing the risk of fire.
Owners of the affected vehicles have been asked not to use their front windshield wipers at all until their vehicles are repaired.
The recall affects the following makes and models:
- 2016 Buick Enclave
- 2016 Chevrolet Traverse
- 2016 GMC Acadia
The recall affects SUVs built between August 18, 2015 and September 24, 2015.
The problem with the vehicles stems from a component manufactured by Valeo Inc. According to recall documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:
"A supplier produced wiper motor covers that were manufactured using a broken tool. This tool produced wiper motor covers that allow internal terminals to move and potentially contact each other, creating an electrical short".
Should that happen, the motor cover may melt, smoke, or catch fire. The problem is so serious that GM sent out this notice:
“Until your vehicle has been repaired, please do not use your windshield wipers. If weather conditions prevent you from operating the vehicle without using the windshield wipers, your dealer will make arrangements to pick up your vehicle for servicing. Also, in the unfortunate event that repair parts are not available, your dealer will arrange to place you into a rental car, at no charge, until the parts needed to repair your vehicle become available.”
GM sent out recall notices by Federal Express on September 30, 2015, so if your vehicle is affected by the recall, you should've received something by now. You're asked to take your vehicle to a dealership immediately for repairs.
