BMW has issued a recall for select 3-Series, 4-Series, X1, X3, and Z4 vehicles from the 2012, 2013, and 2014 model years. According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (PDF), some of those vehicles may suffer from flaws in their braking systems.

The problem with these late-model vehicles is rooted in the brake vacuum pump. Insufficient lubrication in the pump could cause the device to fail, reducing a driver'a ability to slow or stop the vehicle and boosting the risk of an accident. The fix for the problem involves installing a locking ring in the camshaft, which will hold the camshaft seal disk in its proper location and ensure the brake pump works as expected.
Specifically, BMW's recall includes:
- 2012-2014 BMW 320i
- 2012-2014 BMW 328i
- 2014 BMW 428i
- 2012-2013 BMW 528i
- 2013-2014 BMW X1
- 2013-2014 BMW X3
- 2012-2014 BMW Z4
All told, the recall affects an estimated 8,988 BMW vehicles registered in the U.S.

BMW says that it intends to mail out recall notices before the end of this month. After receiving those notices, owners will be able to take their vehicles to a BMW dealer, who will install the locking ring free of charge.
