Today, many of us will be glued to our laptops and smartphones, eagerly awaiting details about Apple's newest slew of must-have devices. But after that burst of excitement fades, you might want to look up -- way up -- because that's where Land Rover wants to send you and three of your most adventurous friends.
It's part of a promotion for the all-new Land Rover Discovery Sport, and it's conducted in partnership with Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic spaceflight company. It's a bit more than a sweepstakes, so if you've got a creative streak, you stand a better chance of winning than if your name were simply tossed in a fedora with thousands of other hopefuls.
Entry is fairly simple:
1. First, visit the contest page at https://gotospace.landrover.com/us and sign in using your Facebook credentials. Then, create a spaceship of your own, name it, and bang out a short, 500-character essay on why you want to go thumping into the thermosphere with three of your besties.
2. Next, shoot a 30-second video that essentially does the same thing as your essay, demonstrating why your group is the perfect fit for space travel aboard Virgin Galactic.
Unlike many of these sorts of contests, which are decided by online votes, the winners of this contest will be selected by a team of four: two reps from Land Rover, and another two from Virgin Galactic. According to the contest rules, "Entries will be judged on their demonstration of answering the question put forth on the Competition Website and the following equally weighted judging criteria: a spirit of adventure, creativity, camaraderie, passion." That's a bit refreshing, if you ask us.
The Canadian winner will receive a trip to New Mexico for a test drive of the Land Rover Discovery Sport. The U.S. winner will win a trip to Iceland, which seems slightly more exotic, though curiously, there's no mention of a test drive. The grand prize winner will nab a fancy-schmancy trip for four to Spaceport America in New Mexico and board one of the first 1,000 space flights made by Virgin Galactic.
The contest is open to most residents of the U.S. and Canada, except Land Rover employees, those without Facebook accounts, and anyone who lives in Quebec (désolé, mes amis). Also, you'll need to enter no later than 11:59pm BST on October 31, 2014.
