If you own a General Motors car, truck, or SUV and you've recently checked the company's customer service website to see if your vehicle has been recalled, you should probably check again. According to Detroit News, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that GM's website has been giving out "incorrect or misleading" details about some recalls.
The folks most likely to have received flawed information are those whose recalls (a) haven't yet begun or (b) are waiting on key parts. In those cases, plugging a vehicle identification number into GM's website may have erroneously suggested that the vehicle wasn't recalled at all.
GM says that it has remedied the problem and that VIN searches conducted after 5:30pm ET on Friday, August 1 should have revealed accurate recall info. If you ran your search before that time, click here to try again.
Sadly, this fix doesn't do much to resolve a far bigger problem involving GM's website. Like other automakers, GM is required to update its customer service site so that anyone can type in a VIN and not only see how many recalls have been issued for the vehicle, but also how many fixes haven't been carried out. The requirement was set by NHTSA and affects all major automakers doing business in the U.S. The new websites are due to roll out no later than August 20.
