GM Is Fixing Some Smoky Engines Under Warranty

July 2, 2014

GM will repair some vehicles with four-cylinder engines for free, over a problem with excessive oil consumption and smoking.

The repair will only include those vehicles still covered by a new vehicle warranty or an extended warranty, if one is in place.

GM has determined that the oil consumption problem in some of these engines emerges when piston rings are not properly mating and sealing to the cylinder bore walls. If an owner notices their engine using a quart or more of oil in 2000 miles, it may be eligible for repair under this Technical Service Bulletin from GM.

The vehicles included in the service action include the following:

  • 2010 - 2013 Buick LaCrosse
  • 2011 - 2013 Buick Regal
  • 2012 - 2013 Buick Verano
  • 2010 - 2013 Chevy Equinox
  • 2012 - 2013 Chevy Captiva
  • 2012 - 2013 Chevy Orlando (Canada only)
  • 2010 - 2013 GMC Terrain

The fix

GM dealers will run an oil consumption test to determine if the condition exists on suspect vehicles. On engines affected by the condition, GM will replace the pistons and rings.

Vehicles that are still under the provisions of the factory warranty will have the repair done at no charge; vehicles that have extended warranties may be covered, but the dealership will have to determine whether the repair is eligible under the extended warranty coverage.
