2001-2004 Ford Escape Recalled for Rust

June 19, 2014

Ford Motor Company is recalling 2001-2004 Escape crossovers operated in salt-belt-states due to a condition that develops from prolonged exposure to road salt.

In affected vehicles, the forward attachment of the car's lower control arm can separate from the front subframe due to corrosion.

The lower control arm is a major part of the front suspension. If the front part of the lower control arm comes loose or separates from the subframe mounting, partial to complete loss of steering control could take place.

The fix

Dealers will inspect all involved vehicles for excessive corrosion in the areas affected. If the vehicle passes inspection, there will be no need for a crossbrace installation.

If the dealer finds excessive corrosion in the affected area, or a separated lower control arm, they will install a reinforcement cross-brace on the subframe so that steering control can be maintained in the event of a separation.

If dealers find related damage as a result of the base condition, Ford might cover those repairs too; each situation is reviewed and decided upon on a case by case basis.

Additionally, Ford may reimburse owners for repairs done prior to the date of this action. Ford will decide if an owner is eligible for reimbursement on a case by case basis.
