The mid-size 2014 Chevrolet Malibu sedan has earned an overall five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The five-star rating is the highest available in the NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) and is determined after vehicles undergo severe testing procedures and receive high combined scores in frontal, side-impact and rollover crash tests.

The 2014 Malibu earned five stars in frontal and side crash tests, and four stars in rollover testing.

The Malibu, however, doesn't earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award. It's rated as "good" in all current tests, but hasn't been subjected to the small-overlap test that now distinguishes Top Safety Picks from other IIHS-rated vehicles.

Standard safety features and technology in the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu include 10 airbags, including knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, ultra-high strength steel safety cage, rollover protection, electronic stability control (now mandated by the federal government), anti-lock brakes, daytime running lights, and OnStar automatic crash response service (standard for the first six months of ownership).

Optional active safety technologies on the 2014 Malibu include Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning, and Side Blind Zone Alert. New for 2014 for the Malibu is Rear Cross Traffic Alert paired with a rearview camera that makes backing up safer.
