2009-2012 Hyundai Genesis Recalled For Braking Problem, 43,500 Vehicles Affected

November 5, 2013

Brake problems seem to be going around. Last week, Nissan recalled the Armada and Titan because of a dodgy brake master cylinder, and just yesterday, Honda recalled over 344,000 Odyssey minivans for "unexpected braking".

Now, Hyundai has jumped on the braking bandwagon with a recall for 2009-2012 models of the Hyundai Genesis. The action affects 43,500 vehicles manufactured over a nearly four-year period, from April 30, 2008 to March 28, 2012.

The recall stems from a problem with the brake fluid found in the Genesis' Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit, or HECU. Such fluid ordinarily protects the HECU from corrosion, but according to a bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, that's not the case in the Hyundai Genesis. As a result, the HECU can corrode, and if that happens, the Genesis' brakes may not work well -- if they work at all. And that, of course, spells trouble for drivers.

Hyundai says that it will notify Genesis owners of the problem by the end of December. After receiving the official recall notice, owners will be able to take their Genesis vehicles to a Hyundai dealer for service.

The service in question will vary depending on when the Genesis was built. As NHTSA explains, "For vehicles manufactured prior to June 01, 2010, dealers will change the brake fluid and inspect the HECU, repairing it as necessary. For vehicles manufactured after June 01, 2010 dealers will flush the HECU assembly and brake system and change the brake fluid." All repairs and inspections will be carried out free of charge.

If you own one of the recalled vehicles and have questions, you're encouraged to contact Hyundai directly at 800-633-5151 or [email protected] Be sure to reference Hyundai's recall number, which is 114. If you prefer, you can also ring NHTSA at 888-327-4236 and ask about recall campaign #13V489000.
