2014 Honda Accord Hybrid Arrives, Boasting 47 MPG

The Honda Accord Hybrid has arrived for 2014, boasting some very impressive credentials. Will it manage to win over consumers in the super-competitive mid-size sedan marketplace? Let's take a look.

Honda's press release for the 2014 Accord Hybrid focuses primarily on its fuel economy -- which is, admittedly, nothing to sneer at. The four-door sedan comes with an EPA rating of 50 mpg city, 45 mpg highway, and 47 mpg combined, allowing it to travel 673 miles on a tank of gas

The competition doesn't fare well by comparison. The Ford Fusion Hybrid is the only sedan to approach the Accord Hybrid's numbers, with a combined 47 mpg rating of its own -- though some owners claim Ford fudged its figures. Whether Accord Hybrid drivers will earn 47 mpg under real-world conditions remains to be seen.

The other thing to like about the Accord Hybrid -- at least for some shoppers -- is that it's made in the U.S.A. It's the first hybrid to be manufactured at Honda's plant in Marysville, Ohio, and only the second Honda hybrid to be made in America. (The other is the Civic Hybrid, built in Greensburg, Indiana.) 

The big question, of course, is how much the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid will cost. The conventional Accord sedan starts just under $22,000, while the plug-in hybrid is priced slightly below $40,000. We'd expect the Accord Hybrid to be competitive with the Ford Fusion Hybrid, which starts at $27,200, and the Toyota Camry Hybrid, priced from $26,140.
