2013 Ram 1500 Recalled For Stability Control Software Glitch

July 17, 2013

Chrysler is recalling certain 2013 Ram 1500 pickup trucks to fix a software glitch that may disable the stability control system.

A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website puts the number of vehicles potentially affected by the recall at 45,961.

The NHTSA bulletin says that the affected vehicles were built from June 26, 2012 through February 5, 2013.

The problem

According to the NHTSA, due to a software issue with the electronic stability control (ESC) module, the ESC system may be disabled after the vehicle is started.

The potential consequence of a disabled ESC system is loss of vehicle control, which increases the risk of a crash.

A statement on the Chrysler website says the safety recall only affects four-wheel drive models. The issue came to light after dealer reports of ESC warning lamp activation. A warning lamp indicates ESC is disabled.

Chrysler said an ensuing investigation discovered that the disabling of the ESC “may inadvertently occur when the transfer case position is changed immediately before the ignition is turned off.” Chrysler modified the software to prevent ESC deactivation in such circumstances.

The automaker said it is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.
