2012 Toyota Yaris Recalled To Fix Power Steering Glitch

July 3, 2013

Toyota is conducting a voluntary safety recall of certain 2012 model year Toyota Yaris compact cars for an issue with the power steering.

The automaker said on its website that approximately 74 vehicles are involved in the recall in the United States.

The problem

At issue is a relay in the power steering control module of the Yaris electronic power steering system that could short-circuit due to too short a distance between terminals in the relay and moisture contaminating relay coil windings.

Toyota says this could cause a loss of power steering assist and require the driver to increase steering effort at low speeds.

Should this condition occur, the electronic power steering warning light on the Yaris’ instrument panel will illuminate and a buzzer will alert the driver that the system is malfunctioning.

What Toyota will do

Toyota will notify owners of vehicles affected by the recall via first-class mail. Dealers will replace the power steering control module.

In the meantime, 2012 Toyota Yaris owners with any questions or concerns may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331, or visit www.toyota.com/recall.
