2013 Chevrolet Malibu Recalled To Fix Rear Suspension

February 1, 2013

General Motors is recalling some 2013 Chevrolet Malibu mid-size sedans to fix potentially defective bolts in the rear suspension.

A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website lists the number of vehicles potentially affected in the United States as 8,519. Affected vehicles were built between December 6, 2011 and January 15, 2013.

The problem

At issue are suspension bolts that may have been insufficiently tightened during the assembly process. GM documentation (PDF) says that one or more  bolts may lack sufficient torque, adding that “the effect will vary depending on which bolt is involved and the progression of the condition.”

The automaker notes that in vehicles with the condition, the driver may first notice noise and a minor affect on handling. Over time, as the condition worsens, sudden changes in vehicle handling may occur, with the end result that the driver may be unable to control the vehicle, particularly at higher speeds. This increases the risk of a crash.

What GM will do

General Motors said that owner notification of affected vehicles has already begun and dealers are expected to complete the work shortly. The no-charge remedy involves inspection of the rear suspension bolts and tightening them as necessary. The GM safety recall number is 13008.

Owners of 2013 Chevrolet Malibu mid-size sedans with any questions or concerns may contact General Motors at 1-800-521-7300.
