Families looking for 2012 model year cars, minivans, SUVs and crossovers awarded the five-star overall ratings by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have a number of different choices.

Granted, the list doesn’t include some popular vehicles from many manufacturers, at least, not yet. A number of them haven’t been rated. That being said, however, the good news is that, even with the more stringent NHTSA testing that began with the 2011 model year, the number of family vehicles with five-star overall rating continues to grow.

Note that the NHTSA is highlighting three advanced technologies that can help in crash avoidance. The first is electronic stability control, or ESC, which helps the driver maintain vehicle control and is standard on all these five-star-rated vehicles. The second is forward collision warning, or FCW, which detects vehicles ahead and cautions the driver of impending collisions. The third is lane departure warning, or LDW, which monitors lane markings on the road and warns the driver of unintentional lane drift.  Both FCW and LDW are available as an option on the 2012 BMW 5-Series and 6-Series.

Another point worth taking into consideration is that every one of these vehicles, with the exception of the Honda Accord, earned 2011 Top Safety Pick status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). That’s likely to carry over to the 2012 models as well.
