If you consider yourself a bargain-hunter, chances are good that you've used one of today's popular online coupon or group-buying sites to save cash. Now, for the first time ever, a major U.S. automaker has joined the fray, using one of those very services to gain customers.

The brand in question is Cadillac, and the service is Groupon. But before Caddy fans get too excited, you should understand that the Groupon offering is a local deal (as these things tend to be). The special comes from LaFontaine Buick GMC Cadillac in Highland Township, Michigan, which has given shoppers the chance to purchase a coupon worth $500 in savings on a new Cadillac. The cost? Just $199. That's $300 of free money.

But we're afraid there's more bad news: the coupon was available for only two days this week: Tuesday and Wednesday, July 12 and 13. Customers can begin redeeming coupons at the Lafontaine dealership as of today.

If you missed out on the deal -- as most probably did -- don't worry. LaFontaine is treating this two-day venture as a test run to gauge the viability of using Groupon more extensively. The dealership hasn't released figures on how many customers purchased the 150 coupons available, but if demand for Volkswagen's recent Jetta offer on Groupon competitor Gilt is any gauge, they may have gone fairly quickly.

For full details of the Groupon offer, check our sister site, Familiy Car Guide. And stay tuned -- we fully expect to see more offers like this down the line, as coupon sites gain traction with a wider swath of shoppers.
