The first towing app for pickups is coming soon from Ford, but it's not the kind of app you're probably thinking of: it uses a built-in four-by-two inch screen to display information, checklists, and tips to help make towing easier. The app is exclusive to Ford F-Series trucks.
Ford says more than 50 percent of F-Series owners regularly tow trailers. Not everyone knows all of the best practices for doing so, however, and this app aims to help correct that.
Among other features, the app walks owners through the trailer hook-up process, asking the following checklist items via the display screen:
- Ball coupler connected and locked?
- Tongue jack raised?
- Mirrors adjusted?
- Electrical wiring connected?
- Lights functioning correctly (running lights, left/right turn and brake lights)?
- Trailer Brake Controller gain setting adjusted?
- Wheel chocks removed?
- Safety chains connected?
The app also stores information on up to 10 different trailers, allowing owners to keep track of service intervals and other statistics for their hauler. There's even off-road towing help, shoing surface incline, steering angle, and degree of lateral tilt to make it safer and easier to negotiate rough terrain with a trailer in tow.
