Mercedes-Benz has launched a number of apps over the past year or so -- most of them pretty mediocre (Mbrace being the notable exception). Given that iffy record, we were dubious about the company's new "Classic" app, but when we put it through its paces, we found enough to interest hardcore Mercedes fans and newbies alike.
"Classic" is meant to give users a sense of Mercedes-Benz's long history in the automotive and engineering arenas. Appropriately, the app centers around the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. Click the "Museum" tab on the opening, and you can tour a number of exhibits, scrolling through great photos of Mercedes' well known (and lesser known) accomplishments. We also enjoyed the short articles about various Mercedes models found under the "Stories" tab in the "Clubs & Community" section. For people who think Mercedes is just limousines and the SLS AMG, this provides a much broader view of the company.
That said, the app has its share of shortcomings. It's intended for a mostly German audience, and there are several areas that developers haven't even bothered to translate into English. And of course, since it's so focused on the museum, non-German residents won't be interested in a substantial chunk of the app's offerings. There's also something about the app's design -- the way the information is organized and accessed -- that seems a little strange. We can't put our finger on exactly what's weird about it, but like most of the company's apps, "Classic" could benefit from a better layout.
Fortunately, "Classic" 100% free, so if it's not to your liking, you can delete it without worrying that you've wasted your money. Less fortunately, "Classic" is only available for Apple mobile devices at the moment -- iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. If you've got one of those lying around, click here to visit iTunes and give it a whirl yourself.
