This week's trending topics:

  • North American Car and Truck of the Year finalists have been announced and no one really seems to be surprised with the nominees. For cars it comes down the Chevrolet Volt, Nissan Leaf, and the Hyundai Sonata. Truck nominee finalists include the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Explorer, and the Dodge Durango. Interestingly enough, Chrysler group has a two-thirds chance of taking home the North American Truck of the Year award due to both the Dodge Durango and the Jeep Grand Cherokee being Chrysler products. • For the first time since the bailout, GM has offered workers at 14 plants buyout packages. The offers are all part of an effort to reduce overall payroll across the company. The buyout packages total $60,000 for skilled workers who will retire or leave GM's payroll before March 2011. [Reuters]
  • Chrysler has announced a recall for 76,000 Ram pickup trucks. The recall is to fix a power-steering problem that can make the brake pedal return slowly after the driver applies them. The recall affects 2010-2011 model year Ram trucks built from March 2009 through October 2010. [Wall Street Journal]
  • Congress thinks that hybrid vehicles should not only be seen, but also heard. A bill has been passed by the house concerning sound levels for hybrid and electric vehicles. These changes have been pushed by blind pedestrians as vehicles have evolved. [ABC News]
  • Volkswagen has announced a recall of over 413,000 cars in the United States and Canada. The recall is to fix a potential fuel leak that could potentially lead to a fire. The recall is for the Golf, Rabbit, Jetta and Jetta Sportwagon models from 2007 to 2009 model years. The New Beetle is also included from 2006 to 2010 model years. [Wall Street Journal]
