The upcoming compact Caddy will be dubbed ATS. The 2011 Cadillac CTS Sedan is shown here.
It's been rumored for months, and now we have pretty concrete confirmation that the upcoming compact Cadillac will be called the ATS.
Slotting in below the CTS, the ATS will share the Alpha platform with the the next generation of the Chevrolet Camaro pony car, will come online in 2012, and could be available in convertible and wagon form, as well.
The ATS will compete with the Lexus IS, the Infiniti G, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the BMW 3-Series. Think of it as the American choice for a near-luxury family car experience, although we bet Cadillac won't forget to add some sporting flair, given the above competition.
Other details aren't yet know, but we're guessing that engine variants could include turbocharged four- and six-cylinder mills, and perhaps naturally aspirated versions with the same cylinder count. A six-speed automatic transmission is almost a given, but a six-speed manual may be available, too. Given that the ATS will share a platform with the next Camaro, rear-wheel drive should be the standard layout, but all-wheel drive seems a likely option.
