Ford One-Ups GM; F-Series Super Duty Now With Best-In-Class Power

August 3, 2010
Ford was not going to be left behind in the ongoing power struggle between them and the Chevrolet Heavy Duty line. Today Ford has announced that the 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty line's 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbodiesel will now offer a whopping 800 pound-feet of torque and 400 horsepower, taking the title as best-in-class.But what if you already own your 2011 Super Duty?  Well don't worry, Ford has you covered. For the next twelve months, starting on August 31st, Ford dealerships will be offering the software upgrade for free. That's right, something free that is actually worth getting.  Expect a letter to be dropping by anytime time so you can rush in for the 30 minute upgrade.

Barb Samardzich, Ford's vice president of powertrain engineering, said: “We want to take care of our loyal F-Series Super Duty pickup owners who supported us when we debuted our all-new Ford-designed, Ford-engineered and Ford-built Power Stroke earlier this year and reward them by offering them the same best-in-class torque, horsepower and fuel economy our new customers are receiving right now."

This program is an industry first, allowing those who quickly jumped after a 2011 F-Series Super Duty to not be left behind. Marc Cross, co-owner of Jordan Ford in San Antonio, said: "It’s human nature to say, ‘Darn, I should have waited.’ But with this program, there’s no penalty for being an early adopter, so to speak."

For all you F-Series owners, this would be a great time to use your one, FREE, Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) fill up; you know the stuff that helps make your truck greener and all that eco-jazz.

What does this do to the Ford and GM's battle over offering the most power trucks on the road?  It benefits the customer.  Look at the 2011 Mustang V-6 and the Camaro RS; they are another example of when automakers fight for the lead, the consumer always wins. Now we have to see if GM will take this laying down or offer a return volley.
