Maybe you're on vacation, and you've suddenly decided to make a daytrip to the outlet mall. Or perhaps you've sent your car to the shop to have its fender un-bended and need a way to get around town the next few days. Whatever the situation, hiring a rental car on the fly can be a real pain in the neck -- but the Priceline app for iPhone just made it a little easier.

Priceline recently added car rental functionality to its popular app for the iPhone. Using the handset's geolocation feature, the app can find a rental outlet near you, or you can specify a rental location if you prefer. Once that's settled, Priceline provides a list of hot deals; pick one and accept it as-is, or toggle the price lower (or higher) to fit your budget. Priceline should provide a yes/no response to your bid within 60 seconds. Even better, the app allows you to book a car as little as 30 minutes ahead of time, so you don't have to wait too long before hitting the road.

At the moment, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz, and National are the only companies participating in Priceline's car rental service for the iPhone app. If you prefer using Enterprise or another company, you can do that, too -- just not through the app directly. Open in Safari, or hit the "information" button at the bottom of the app screen to click through to the Priceline website.

Roam those roads while you can...
