Hyundai's 2011 Sonata sedan has been an unqualified success so far. With a turbo version and a hybrid version on the way, Hyundai may be looking to strengthen its position in the mid-size marketplace even further.
Adding a wagon to the lineup would be one way to do that, and Hyundai appears to be testing a wagon version that will go on sale as a 2012 model. Expected to debut at the Paris Auto Show in October, the new Sonata wagon will likely be dubbed i40 in Europe.
We expect it to have the same direct-injection gasoline engines (GDI) that are offered in the current Sonata sedan, and it should also be available with the upcoming hybrid powertrain.
As the latest spy shots show, function may follow form on the Sonata wagon, but knowing Hyundai, we don't expect the company to abandon practicality.
Wagons aren't the only future possibility for the Sonata--rumors are also swirling about a convertible version.
