2010 Land Rover Range Rover Sport: The Perfect Family Car?

June 10, 2010

What is the perfect family car? Family cars come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, colors and prices. Take the Volkswagen Golf for example; this is a very popular small family car. It's the ideal car for a young family, with young children. However, once your children grow to their teenage years, they will no longer have enough room in the back. For a car that will last through your child's growth spurt and still be used once they have stopped growing you may need to look into the SUV market. There are dozens of choices from the Toyota RAV4 to the Mitsubishi Pajero and even to the smaller Subaru Outback; choosing the perfect car for your family is not easy. If, however, your family is the outdoorsy type then the Range Rover Sport maybe your best choice.

This 2010 model is the very latest in this very famous line of SUVs, which goes back to the 1970s. It's offered with either a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 or a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8. The standard V-8 puts out 375 horsepower through all four wheels, while the supercharged one gets a massive 510 horsepower. The new supercharged engine now has 29 percent more power and 12 percent more torque than the previous 4.2-liter supercharged unit.

The supercharged engine has so much power and torque that it will rocket the Range Rover Sport from a standstill to 60 mph in only 5.9 seconds, which for a car that weighs 5,500 pounds is very impressive. On the other hand that is not what this car is primarily built for, it's built primarily to go off-road.

For this latest model a new feature has been introduced called ‘sand launch control’. This is designed to reduce initial wheel-slip on slippery surfaces resulting in a much easier drive-away. The newest Range Rover Sport has also received the famous and award-winning Terrain ResponseTM system, which is packed full of off-road options depending on where you are. This Hill Descent Control system has been bettered with the attachment of Gradient Release Control.

In the cabin it is still full of leather and wood and luxury. This new interior has been comprehensively redesigned with improvements of quality and craftsmanship. The leather seats now offer much more choice for the owner with more colors available.

Prices start at $59,645 for the standard V-8 and the supercharged variant comes in at $73,345.
