Baltimore Tops List Of Most Dangerous Cities For Drivers

May 16, 2010

The city of Baltimore is known for many things, from its delicious crab cakes to its eclectic neighborhoods to its amazingly high murder rate. Now, according to, the Charm City has another feather in its cap: it’s the most dangerous driving city in America.

Baltimore beat out Johnstown, PA and Portland, ME for the distinction (although it should be noted that neither Massachusetts nor New York, two states with, ahem, “aggressive” drivers were, included in the study).

Researchers came up with the numbers by calculating which percentage of drivers claimed a prior accident when requesting a comparison quote. Baltimore topped the list with 36.5 percent.

It’s possible that many of the accidents are caused by enraged Orioles fans leaving the ballpark and vandalizing the nearest vehicle they can find. Also, Baltimore is a port city, so perhaps people are inadvertently driving their cars into the ocean.

The least dangerous place to drive? Yuma, Arizona. Not too surprising, since there are no people in Yuma. The next four on this list are all cities in Michigan (Flint, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Traverse City). So, let’s all move to Michigan? Nah. I’ll stay here in Boston and take my chances.

However, if you’re ever driving in Baltimore, stay alert, use your directionals and avoid Camden Yards after Orioles games.
