In the world of advertising, product placement is big business. It's also a big gamble, since the payoff depends on factors beyond the advertiser's control. When the stars align, companies get great press like Chevrolet did when it was placed in last summer's Transformers sequel. When the gods are angry...well, you end up with Coke's placement in The Road.
Volkswagen is now trying its hand at product placement by putting the 2010 VW Touareg into the new Repo Men movie, starring Jude Law, Forrest Whitaker, and Liev Schreiber. We have no idea how the venture will play out -- though we should note that Repo Men is not a sequel to the 80s classic Repo Man, but instead a spin on 2008's Repo! The Genetic Opera, starring Paul Sorvino, Sarah Brightman, and, um, Paris Hilton. So at least we know it's an improvement on the original -- and likely better than the Touareg's previous ads.
