VW Planning Diesel Beetle And Electric Up! Minicar For U.S.

December 7, 2009

At last week’s 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show Volkswagen unveiled special Final Edition versions of its New Beetle Coupe and Convertible, signalling that the current model’s run is set to come to an end.

That's because Volkswagen’s New Beetle (pictured), which has been on sale since 1998, is set to be replaced by a brand new car in 2012 and according to the automaker’s U.S. chief, Stefan Jacoby, a clean diesel engine is planned for the iconic car.

Jacoby also revealed that a production version of Volkswagen’s 2007 Up! minicar concept is also headed to the U.S. in 2014. However, while other markets will receive gasoline and diesel versions, the models sold in the U.S. will only be available with electric powertrains.

The U.S. will also miss out on several Up! variants that will be sold overseas, including a minivan and sedan.
