Smart traffic lights may be the next wave of the war against fuel consumption, as countless gallons of fuel are wasted at a standstill every day. BMW is leading the charge on that front, hoping to add some sophistication to the 40-year-old lights system we have now.

Speaking of BMW, over at Motor Authority there's a fresh perspective on what it's like behind the wheel of the 2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo 550i, or 550i GT. While it's not necessarily a winner in any one category, its wide-ranging approach makes it a highly flexible vehicle that's likely to suit many tastes and purposes. That's not the only review on the docket today, as Bengt Halvorson takes a look at the 2010 Mazda CX-9 here at TheCarConnection.

Focusing in on a more singular purpose, Volkswagen is planning to launch a hybrid version of its 2011 Touareg SUV alongside the updated car's debut in January. Porsche is also going to offer a hybrid Cayenne and Audi will build a hybrid Q7, both based around the same core platform as the Touareg, so it's no surprise, but it is certainly a welcome addition for those looking to add some green to their larger utility vehicle.

CelebsAndCars' daily dose of famous car hounding comes in the form of a shot of A-Rod climbing into his Porsche 911 convertible after a hard day at the gym. Oh, the struggles of the painfully rich, famous and attractive.

And there's even more news all around the High Gear Media network of sites, including a lot of electric car news, word that the Mercedes-Benz C-Class may find its new production home in Alabama, and an up-close take on the 2010 Toyota Matrix.
