Preview: 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

August 19, 2009

Another world debut has been set for the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show--it's the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, the stepping stone between street editions and the racing GT3.

Porsche says the newly reintroduced model--seen here wearing some interesting Crayola-inspired details--brings with it a bored-out 3.8-liter flat six making 450 horsepower. The redline's soared to 8500 rpm, and the more powerful engine's paired with a six-speed manual shifter with shorter ratios than those in the GT3. That probably shaves miles per hour off its top end, Porsche admits, but it's in the interests of making the GT3 RS an even sharper tool on the track.

Also fitted: a special suspension setup with a wider track and flared-out fenders to accommodate the new girth. Porsche says the front wheels are 9 inches wide and are shod with 245/35 ZR 19 sports tires; the rears are a foot wide, with 325/30 ZR 19 sports tires.

The 911 GT3 RS also swaps out the typical lead-acid battery used for ignition, for a lighter lithium-ion battery. It's no hybrid, despite the Li-ion connotations: the battery simply weight about 22 pounds less. A carbon-fiber wing and titanium exhaust system top off the package.

Available early next spring, the Day-Glo-infused 911 GT3 RS will run you $132,800. Or, roughly, 125,000 times more than that box of 64 crayons you've also been lusting after.
