Yes, folks: the 59 votes are in, and automotive journos from around the globe have declared the Volkswagen Golf as the 2009 World Car of the Year. In an effort to utter the world "golf" as often as possible on this very special day, Volkswagen of America president/CEO Stefan Jacoby said, "This is a great way to kick-off the new Golf here in America. We’re excited for the arrival of the sixth generation Golf, which will be in Volkswagen showrooms later this year. Simply put, we believe this is the best Golf ever." On an unrelated note: we suddenly have a strange desire to wear plaid pants.

Now, we've never been entirely clear as to what makes a "World Car of the Year", and the World Car of the Year site doesn't really clarify matters. However, since there are separate awards for design, performance, and greenishness, we're going to assume that WCOTY is kind of a best-of-the-best and leave it at that.

Oh, and speaking of those other awards, here they are, as announced at the New York Auto Show:

  • 2009 World Car Design of the Year: Fiat 500
  • 2009 World Performance Car of the Year: Nissan GT-R
  • 2009 World Green Car: Honda FCX Clarity

Feel free to debate the judges' findings all you like in the comments section below.
