2009 Porsche 911 Carrera To Sport Variable Volume Exhaust System

January 26, 2009

Want to hear the guttural growl of Porsche's flat-six with even greater intensity? Starting in February, for $2,500 you can outfit your 2009 911 with a new factory sports exhaust system that is driver-selectable for either more or less of the singular snarl. I'd probably have it on full blast just about all the time, though less drone on roadtrips is nice and available at the touch of a button.

Says Porsche: "at the touch of a button the exhaust system switches over to a sporting and emotional sound generated in particular whenever the driver prefers a truly dynamic style of motoring." The exhaust system will be available on the 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera and Targa 4.

To generate more sound, modified stainless-steel main silencers with exhaust flaps are used; the flaps open up to emit more exhaust sound when activated. The system itself continually adjusts based on engine load, vehicle speed, and engine RPM.

If you already have a Porsche and just can't stand your neighbor's 911 snarling out louder decibels than yours can muster, starting in April Porsche will offer a Tequipment retrofit.
