Link Love From The Car Connection

January 14, 2009

Here are a few miscellaneous news items that have throttled across our desks:

  • Hang up and drive: The National Safety Council is pushing for a nationwide ban on cell phone usage while driving.  Which would solve the problem of inconsistent state-by-state laws and give us an excuse to dodge calls from mom. [Edmunds]
  • A British driver's wish list: Mike Rutherford has come up with a very long list of improvements for British roadways and drivers--many of would be relevant in the US. Our fave? His call for "incentives to work from home or local libraries, resulting in more space on choked commuter routes." Because we really need incentive to be lazier.  [AutoExpress]
  • UAW rallies for cash: Ron Gettelfinger & Co. are taking their case against wage cuts to the streets. No, cutting wages isn't pleasant, but is some better than none at all? [DetNews]
  • Lotus Elise--now in carbon fiber form:  Hong Kong auto enthusiast Jimmy Wong had much of his 2002 Lotus Elise converted to carbon fiber. It took about six months, and it's got an unusual exterior, but it's nearly 100 pounds lighter. That's gotta be good, right? [AutoMotto]
  • Harley outreach: America's baddest motorcycle outfit has gone a little touchy-feely with a new program to mentor young riders and recruit women to the ranks. But wait--haven't young women been of interest to Harley riders for a while? [PRNewswire]
  • Plastics, Benjamin: Nothing is immune from the lure of green these days--even plastics. The future of the environmentally unfriendly material may be tied to old school castor oil. Next up: mustard plasters used to fix leaky tires. [NYTimes]
