The 2009 Detroit auto show is in the history books--at least for the media--and true to promise, it was a far more sober affair. The financial crisis has been averted for now at GM and Chrysler, but all the side trappings--fashion shows, lavish dinners and whiz-bang product introductions--were slimmed down or done away with altogether. Unless you're at Mercedes-Benz, where a new E-Class rang in the new year along with Broadway diva Audra McDonald.
The leaner times have even struck Japan. Toyota president Katsuaki Watanabe didn't make the trip to Detroit to unveil the 2010 Prius, and Honda did away with a press conference altogether for its 2010 Honda Insight.
