Jeep Manufacture Moves to India?

October 14, 2008
Not only does India house the customer service representatives for your recently failed bank, the country may soon be home to the manufacture of an American icon: Jeep. Carscoop reports that India's Argentum Motors has confirmed an "outsourced manufacturing deal" with Chrysler LLC, and that Argentum is busy retooling its plants to manufacture larger vehicles, specifically those the size of SUVs.

The head of corporate communications for Argentum Motors, Colonel Bhagwati Prasad Suman, is the source of this information. He claims that his company is "currently in negotiations" with Chrysler LLC. Argentum currently builds small cars at its Indian manufacturing facility, but Suman says upgrades will soon give it the ability to produce SUVs.

Also according to Suman, production cost savings would be "at least 15%" in such an arrangement with an American manufacturer. In an apparent pitch for business, he added that the first companies to strike a deal with Argentum would get the best deals, as they are "ready to work on a cost-to-cost basis."

Interesting news, indeed, from a brand that strikes a rather patriotic tone with its slogan: "There's Only One."--Colin Mathews
