Jetta Diesel Starts in the Low $20s

June 18, 2008
Your diesel love will come cheap from Volkswagen, according to a press release today from cosmopolitan Herndon, Virginia. Volkswagen of America says the new diesel versions of the Jetta sedan and Sportwagen will be priced in the low to mid-$20,000 range.

The Jetta's new diesel engine is a 2.0-liter clean-diesel four. It's 50-state compliant, and will carry the longstanding TDI initials when it goes on sale here in August.

The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI sedan has a base price of $21,990, Volkswagen says, while the nifty Jetta SportWagen TDI will start from $23,590. EPA fuel economy estimates run from 29 mpg city, 40 mpg highway.

All TDI models will get standard side and curtain airbags as well as stability control, while side rear airbags will be an option. Volkswagen will also pick up the maintenance tab for the first three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.
