
We’re this way and that way on all the fuss about plug-in hybrids. Everyone has one—but no one can buy one until the battery technology is just right. So for now at least, the action is happening in test fleets, like the 20-van group DaimlerChrysler is putting on the road. The DC plug-ins are Sprinter vans with either diesel or gasoline versions. Some will test regular nickel-metal hydride batteries, while others experiment with lithium-ion batteries that experts believe will be the future of plug-ins. The DC vans are put together near Charleston, South Carolina—and we’ll road test one for you in the near future.
