Called the C5 Airscape, the concept features a high waistline, ribbed panels and a concave rear window that’s lifted straight off the flagship C6 production car. Very much an executive drop-top in the mold of the BMW 3-Series cabriolet, it has large air intakes and twin chrome tailpipes and rides on 19-inch alloys. The electric roof opens to reveal a smart interior of dark-brown leather and chrome, with a fixed-hub steering wheel as seen on the C4.
It’s designed to be a very eco-friendly car. Fuel economy is managed by an ‘UrbanHybrid’ system that includes a reversible alternator-starter and super capacitors. This system allows onboard equipment, such as the air conditioning or audio system, to be powered by energy recovered during braking and deceleration. Engine torque can be temporarily boosted when required by releasing power gained through a ‘regenerative braking’ feature.
The ‘UrbanHybrid’ system also switches off the engine when the vehicle is at standstill, before starting it again when the accelerator is pressed. Under the hood is a 208-hp 2.7HDi V-6 engine, which can run on biodiesel, complete with particulate filter.
