TCC Previews Los Angeles/Detroit Auto Shows

If you’re even only vaguely connected to the auto industry, you’re most likely preparing for the winter onslaught that is the dueling Los Angeles and Detroit auto shows. This year’s pair of shows — as always — promises to be the best yet.

But there’s no need to wait to see the new models. Much of what you’ll see at both shows is already showing up on Web pages — especially ours. Pull it all together in one place and you have our omnibus Detroit and L.A. show preview. We’ve lumped them together because we hope you’ll be too busy celebrating to discern a difference — plus we’re sure most, if not all, of these concepts appearing first at L.A. will make an appearance in Detroit as well. L.A. show debuts are noted where appropriate. Return here as often as you can for frequent updates as news breaks. And stay tuned starting January 4 as we bring the Los Angeles show to you, and January 9 as Detroit opens its doors.

Toyota Firms Up Detroit Plans

Toyota says its plans for the Detroit auto show include a brace of vehicles for both the Toyota and Lexus brands. Two will be production vehicles, according to a press release unaccompanied by pictures. The 2005 Toyota Avalon will bow at Detroit, with promised increases in performance and in luxury features. It goes on sale in 2005. The other production vehicle is an updated LX470 SUV for Lexus, which gets a more powerful V-8 engine with 270 hp and an anti-roll system. Two concepts will show up in Detroit as well: a Toyota concept sport wagon loosely based on the next Highlander due in the 2006 model year, and the Lexus LF-A, a high-performance sportscar concept presaged by spy shots of a supercar running around Toyota's stomping grounds.

The Lexus concept could be the forerunner of a new supercar under development at Toyota. Toyota has been eyeing Nissan's success with the revived 350Z — and apparently, from spy pictures nabbed this week, it's been a little jealous of supercars like the Porsche Carrera GT, too. Toyota 's been caught testing what some insiders are calling the "TXS," a limited-production exotic that might be powered by a V-10 engine worth 500 hp.

Pictures show the TXS with enough cladding to disguise much of its shape, but clearly, this is no Celica or MR2-sized sportscar. Insiders suggest the car will tip in at less than 3000 pounds, giving its 500-hp powerplant (with 370 lb-ft of torque) a serious chance at catching the likes of the Porsche and Benz supercars. Top speed could reach 190 mph, the same league as the 550-hp Ford GT. Whether the drivetrain offers any version of Toyota 's hybrid technology is unknown. Whether the final vehicle is sold as a Lexus or as a Toyota , it's likely that a limited production run of about 10,000 units is in order.

Detroit's auto show will also witness the debuts of an Infiniti concept vehicle and the production version of the M sport sedan. The Kuraza concept, Nissan says, "takes an exploratory look at future SUV interior design, starting with equal comfort, amenities, and roominess provided for all passengers." It's set for a January 10 unveiling in Detroit. The Nissan upscale brand will also show off the new M sedan, which goes on sale in the early spring of 2005. It will come with either a 3.5-liter V-6 or a 4.5-liter V-8.

A sporty coupe concept from Nissan is headed for a Detroit show debut. The AZEAL concept was previewed in sketch form on Monday. Nissan gave little information with the concept, but sources stress that the concept doesn't suggest a production-ready vehicle - just the company's concept of a youthful, "pocket rocket" crowd. The Detroit show opens to the media on Jan. 9.

The next in a line of Acura concept SUVs will be show in Detroit at the January auto show, Acura said on Thursday. The RD-X concept is billed as a concept of the upcoming production sport-ute due in showrooms in 2006. Acura promises the RD-X combines carlike handling and SUV utility, and thus is aiming it at the usual active urban professionals. A wood and leather interior is in the offing, "based on the feeling of an upscale loft apartment." Does that come with the usual $500 monthly association fee? We'll let you know on Sunday, Jan. 9th, when Acura pulls the covers off the concept at Cobo Hall.

The Honda SUT concept shown at Detroit's auto show last January and due at dealers in spring will be called the Ridgeline. The 2006 Ridgeline, Honda say, will be powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 with a five-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, a powertrain familiar to owners of the Honda Pilot and Acura MDX. The Ridgeline will come standard with four-wheel anti-lock brakes, side curtain airbags, and stability control. The Ridgeline has not been priced, but the production version will be shown at the 2005 Detroit auto show, to be held in January.

Although it will take a while before the Volkswagen Passat will be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the first pictures have been released. The new Passat is 2.4 inches longer, 2.8 inches wider and just a tad taller than the current generation, which is on the market now for eight years. The good looks of the slick body does raise a question: is this a sensible replacement for the Phaeton? Although the picture does not show it clearly, the Passat has a new front with a tall grille, in the style of the new Audi models. The Passat will be available with a brand new 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine with 170 hp, two other existing diesels and a range of gas engines ranging from the 102-hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder to the 3.2-liter V-6. The new Passat will arrive on the European markets in April; a 4Motion version will follow in a later stage. -Henny Hemmes

The next generation of the Volkswagen Jetta sedan will be introduced at the Los Angeles auto show in January. On Thursday, Volkswagen released the first official photos of the new Jetta, the most popular VW model sold in the U.S. (it accounts for 40 percent of VW's volume in the States). The fifth-generation Jetta, which goes on sale in March, gets a new multi-link rear suspension, a base five-cylinder engine with 2.5 liters of displacement, and an optional six-speed Tiptronic automatic. The DSG semi-manual gearbox sold on some Audi models will be offered on the Jetta as well, and other additions to the larger, more sophisticated Jetta include electric power steering, stability control, and anti-lock brakes.

Mercedes-Benz has released these first pictures of the new 2006 M-Class sport-ute, due to be shown at the Detroit auto show in January. According to a release, the new M-Class sits 5.9 inches longer, 2.8 inches wider and 0.4 inches lower on the road than the first-generation vehicle, with a 114-inch wheelbase that's 3.7 inches longer than before.  The new M-Class switches from a body-on-frame design to a unibody platform - more like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. A new G-Class with seven-person seating may also be shown; too, the B-Class crossover vehicle, and even the U.S. version of the Smart formore, may be shown in an all-out Benz SUV show.

Hyundai Sonata

Though it was on display at the recent Paris auto show, Hyundai's Sonata hadn't officially been shown to the U.S. press in its domesticated version. Now, Hyundai has issued the first shots of the U.S. Sonata, which will issue forth from the company's new plant near Montgomery, Alabama, beginning in 2005. The Sonata will be shown at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next January. The new, larger Sonata will be available with either a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine or a new 3.3-liter V-6, and will be the first vehicle to be produced at the new Hyundai plant. 2005 Hyundai Tucson by Bengt Halvorson (11/15/2004)

Kia has issued this illustration of the KCD-II concept, set to be unveiled at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The second concept vehicle from Kia's California design center, Kia says the vehicle shows what a potential three-row, seven-seater SUV from the Korean company would look like. The 192-inch concept has a 116-inch wheelbase. Kia has long sought a vehicle that would be capable of moving it upmarket in the SUV class; the same vehicle might potentially spawn a pickup truck as well, another niche the company is interested in.

The Dodge-sourced truck Mitsubishi will put on sale next year will be dubbed the Raider, in a nod to Mitsu's SUVs past. The ailing Japanese carmaker told its dealers in New Orleans on Thursday that the truck will get a standard V-6 with a V-8 option, two different cab configurations, and distinct style to keep from confusing it with the Dakota, on which it's based to a minimum. A 500-watt sound system and Bluetooth integration of cell phones will please the techno-addicted.

Mitsu also told dealers that the 2006 Eclipse will bow alongside the Raider at the 2005 Detroit auto show in January. The new Eclipse will actually go on sale first — in summer 2005, a couple of months ahead of the Raider. The Eclipse will get more powerful four- and six-cylinder engines (the six is worth 260 hp), an available six-speed manual gearbox or five-speed automatic and 18-inch wheels, and an optional 650-watt Rockford Fosgate audio system with a six-CD in-dash changer, MP3 playback, and nine speakers with a 10-inch subwoofer.

Audi A3

The A3 five-door from Audi is migrating to the States next year, and will be pitched at those hazily defined active-lifestylers who never sit down long enough to be properly tagged for observation. The A3 treks across the Atlantic in May 2005 as the entry-level vehicle in the brand's U.S. lineup. At about $25,000 base, the A3 will occupy a unique niche that's not quite station wagon and not quite hot-hatch. Audi poses the Mazda3, Saab 9-2X, MINI and other jazzy more-than-two-doors as possible competition, but given its upscale heritage and five-door format, it's difficult to pin down exactly what you'd price out on Edmunds or Kelly Blue Book before going out to comparison shop.
