2017 Volvo XC90 vs. Its Competition

2017 Volvo XC90 Excellence

The 2017 Volvo XC90 follows its own path while competing against Japanese and German prestige utility vehicles.

The result is a sensible, understated version of luxury, Swedish style.

The seven-seat Acura MDX has been a strong competitor in the near-luxury segment for years, and is priced slightly lower than its competitors.

The Audi Q7 is entirely redesigned this year; it's lighter, tech-heavy, and true to the Audi vision of sporty luxury.

That applies to the BMW X5 as well, while the Mercedes-Benz GLE (nee ML Class) is an older model that is more deliberate and heavier behind the wheel.

Both BMW and Mercedes offer low-volume plug-in hybrid models with similar ranges to the Volvo's, though the German competitors have just five seats.

There's also the aging Infiniti QX60 (nee JX), which is spacious and offers chosen luxury features.

But it falls down both in driving experience and its use of a continuously variable transmission (CVT), meaning it's just not at the level of the others.

Quick Specs
The 2017 Volvo XC90 is comfortable, capable, and only whispers its virtues—reinterpreting the Volvo brand as quiet sophistication in comfort, style, and efficiency.
The 2017 Acura MDX is one of the best-driving, most technologically advanced three-row luxury crossovers, and a new Sport Hybrid model and active suspension should only add to that reputation.
The 2017 Audi Q7 gets a rakish new sport-wagon look, a finely detailed, tech-savvy interior, and serious chassis advancements underneath—including a dramatic weight loss, available rear-wheel steering, and a plug-in hybrid version.
The 2017 BMW X5 boasts a solid set of powertrains and features that move the sedan toward the top of any list of luxury SUVs.
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class pared down its powertrains to gas only or a plug-in hybrid, although it still has plenty of stops in between for luxury buyers.
