2016 Volvo XC90 vs. Its Competition

The 2016 Volvo XC90 is now squarely aimed at German and Japanese prestige brands, but it charts its own course in providing a quiet, undemonstrative Swedish version of luxury.

The Audi Q7 is all-new for 2016, and offers a plug-in hybrid version just as the XC90 does; we’ve not yet driven the new Q7.

The BMW X5 is about to be updated halfway through its model life, and will also add a plug-in hybrid—but it only offers five seats.

The five-seat Mercedes GLE is a mid-cycle update of the former ML Class; it too adds a plug-in hybrid version as well, but remains heavier and more deliberate behind the wheel.

The seven-seat Acura MDX has been a strong competitor in the near-luxury segment for years, and is priced slightly lower than its competitors.

Finally, the Infiniti QX60 (nee JX) offers practical space and carefully chosen luxury features, but its driving experience and continuously variable transmission (CVT) aren’t up to the level of the others.

Quick Specs
The 2016 Volvo XC90 is a capable and comfortable luxury utility vehicle that whispers its virtues rather than shouting them—and reinvents Volvo as a purveyor of quietly sophisticated design, comfort, and efficiency.
The 2017 Audi Q7 gets a rakish new sport-wagon look, a finely detailed, tech-savvy interior, and serious chassis advancements underneath—including a dramatic weight loss, available rear-wheel steering, and a plug-in hybrid version.
The 2016 Acura MDX remains one of the best luxury three-row SUVs, but the benefits of its new nine-speed automatic are unclear.
The benchmark of mid-size luxury SUVs, the 2016 BMW X5 offers handsome looks, a choice of powertrains, an abundance of tech features, sporty on-road dynamics, and even some off-road capability.
The 2016 Infiniti QX60 has a rich look and excellent interior space. Suspension changes this year aim to improve dynamics but miss the mark.
The M-Class gets a new lease on luxury-crossover life as the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class—and it's joined by a swoopy new Coupe variant.
