2014 Volvo XC90 vs. Its Competition

Most of the competition has been redesigned in recent years, unlike the XC90, which has gone more or less unchanged for over a decade now.

However, it's remained competitive over the years–built as one of first really well-designed SUVs intended for passenger comfort over off-road use.

Both the VW Touareg and Mercedes-Benz M-Class have seen major overhauls, but only have two rows of seating.

The Touareg is more practical now for families, and the Mercedes is nicer inside than in the past, while maintaining some off-pavement prowess, too.

The BMW X5 has a small third row, but it's been completely redesigned for 2014 with major upgrades inside.

The Acura MDX is a standout when it comes to driving dynamics–it's nimble, comfortable and has a responsive powertrain.
