The 2016 Volvo XC70 Cross Country can soar above $50,000, despite its base price of about $35,000.
That puts the wagon-based crossover up against everything from luxury SUVs to mainstream crossovers.
It's certainly less expensive than the German entries of the same size from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes, which may make it a more direct competitor for the Acura MDX and Lexus RX.
And it probably competes with the smaller but more stylish Volvo XC60 crossover next to it on showroom floors.
The Audi Allroad is the most wagon-like competitor, because it's based on the A4 wagon—but it's tighter inside, if more fun to drive.
The Acura MDX is on the sporty end of the segment, with a more high-tech appeal, and the Lexus RX that defined the luxury crossover segment is all-new this year and likely a very effective entry.
Finally, the Subaru Outback may be closest in character and assets to the XC70, but it's newer and has steadily eaten into Volvo's traditional market for sturdy, unpretentious wagons.
Even the priciest Outback with every option will only take you into the low end of the XC70's price range.
