2014 Volvo XC70 vs. Its Competition

Starting around $34k and exceeding $50k with the right options, the 2014 XC70 runs with mainstream crossovers on the low end, but competes with luxury SUVs at its best.

It's less expensive than any of the comparably-equipped Audi, Mercedes-Benz or BMW products, but the Acura MDX and Lexus RX 350 hang out around the price point.

The MDX offers sporty driving dynamics and new styling for 2014, while the Lexus also offers a hybrid option.

On the less expensive side, the Subaru Outback is less luxurious, but is a near-match in the tall wagon category.

The Audi Allroad was new last year and lends luxury from the brand's lineup to sedans to the slightly more rugged dynamics suited to a crossover.

There's also Volvo's XC60, which may be more of a crossover than a wagon, but it's worth a look.

Quick Specs
The 2014 Volvo XC70 is an upscale option for active families–offering advanced safety technology in a tough, luxurious, utilitarian vehicle.
The 2014 Acura MDX is more focused than ever on its mission of keeping the entire family comfortable, content, and entertained—and yes, that still includes the driver.
With its perky, composed all-wheel-drive performance, the 2014 Audi Allroad isn't just the family pick of the A4 lineup; it's a better-driving alternative to taller crossovers.
While the 2014 Lexus RX may not be over-the-top luxurious, it's a plush, lavish crossover that delivers the right premium impression.
Above all else, the 2014 Subaru Outback remains an eminently practical and capable vehicle, with generous interior space both for people and their gear.
The 2014 Volvo XC60 keeps in sync with Volvo's reputation for safe, luxurious wagons–just in a taller crossover package.
