2013 Volvo XC70 vs. Its Competition

With a price range that starts around $34k and ranges past $50k fully loaded, the 2013 XC70 spans between mass-market crossovers and luxury wagons and crossovers, and it's less expensive than any comparable BMW, Audi, or Mercedes-Benz.

If you expand the potential models to include taller crossovers, the Lexus RX 350 and Acura MDX are strong contenders.

The Lexus is offered in a hybrid model as well, while the MDX offers strong handling and a sporty style that has aged well.

At the more affordable end of the XC70 span, the Subaru Outback should be considered as an alternative; it's not nearly as luxurious and premium-feeling inside, but it serves many of the same roles and is in the same way more of a tall-riding station wagon than a true utility vehicle.

One more alternative, the Audi Allroad, is new for 2013 and it pairs rugged exterior cues with some of the interior luxuries of Audi's larger vehicles--plus a very fuel-efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Volvo's own XC60 is more of a crossover utility vehicle in silhouette and mission but is worth a look as well.

Quick Specs
The 2013 Volvo XC70 hits a family sweet spot as a vehicle that packs the accommodations of a station wagon and advanced safety-tech features into the chunkier, tougher image and ability of a utility vehicle.
The 2013 Acura MDX is one of the most satisfying and enjoyable vehicles to drive, if you must have three rows of seats.
A perky turbo four, composed all-wheel-drive handling, and a high-quality cabin make the Audi Allroad the best A4 you can buy.
The 2013 Lexus RX is plush and premium, and it delivers on that luxury impression, but it's not the over-the-top lavish expression some might seek.
The 2013 Subaru Outback is practical above all: it's capable in all kinds of conditions, and has great interior space and standard all-wheel drive.
The 2013 Volvo XC60 carries on the tradition of Volvo wagons--even their top-of-the-class safety--only in a modern, fashion-conscious crossover.
